With close to 12,000 businesses in the area, Chelmsford has the largest business base in Essex and a large and prosperous economy.
Chelmsford has a very strong economy that supports a healthy range of sectors and contributes over £3 billion a year to the Essex economy. Some 83,000 jobs and over 8,000 businesses form the heart of the City’s economy.
The professional, scientific and technical sectors, along with the construction sector are the two largest sectors in Chelmsford, comprising almost 30%. Both of the sectors make up a larger proportion of the business base than they do across the East of England and the UK overall.
The city not only attracts young technology companies, start-ups and entrepreneurs, but major international organisations also have a significant presence.

The city also has a strong research and development sector, including organisations Teledyn e2v and Battelle.
